This best practice guidance is designed to help schools either: establish an on-site health advice service; or develop quick and easy referral arrangements to a service based in the local community. It provides practical advice, case studies and responses to frequently asked questions.

Many schools are already providing health 'drop-ins' as part of the extended services they offer, and many more are thinking about joining up with health colleagues to offer them. This guidance seeks to help those setting up new services to learn from the experience of those who are already offering them.

The guidance explains how on-site health advice can help free young people from health concerns that affect their ability to learn effectively or, at worst, lead to their disengagement from learning. It also shows how improving young people's access to health advice can help to tackle public health concerns, including sexual health, teenage pregnancy, drug and alcohol misuse, obesity, and emotional health and well-being.
