Culture, sport, play

When asked what they regard as their priorities, children and young people consistently reply that they would like more "things to do and places to go".

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is working to improve access to culture, sport and play for children and young people, so that they can develop their talents and enjoy the benefits of participation.

Culture, sport and play organisations have a unique role to play in helping to deliver Every Child Matters: Change for Children agenda, by:

  • Delivering the five outcomes - particularly enjoying and achieving and making a positive contribution

  • Being key partners in children's trusts and contributing to Children and Young People's Plans

  • Supporting families and promoting diversity

  • Reaching millions of children and young people through positive out-of-school activities

DCMS works through its sponsored bodies to mobilise the national culture, sport and play networks to deliver change for children.

Examples of good practice in these sectors are available in the Cultural Connections section of the IDeA website.
