Children's Workforce Strategy

Developing the Children's Workforce for 2020

Following publication of the Children's Plan, the Government has established an Expert Group on the Children's Workforce to support the development of a long-term strategy for the children's workforce. This will ensure that the development of the children's workforce as a whole is appropriately supported; enabling people working with children, young people and their families to deliver services that help children and young people achieve their full potential across all five Every Child Matters outcomes.

The children's workforce means everyone who works with children, young people or their families (including volunteers) because they all have a role to play in improving outcomes for children and young people.

Building Brighter Futures: Next Steps for the Children's Workforce was published in April 2008. It describes progress so far in the development of the children's workforce, and sets out actions for the next three years. It builds on the Children's Workforce Strategy that was published in 2005 and the consultation on the Children's Workforce Strategy Update - Spring 2007.

Building Brighter Futures: Next Steps for the Children's Workforce also sets the context for the development of the long-term strategy which will look forward to 2020. This work is being supported by the Expert Group on the Children's Workforce, which is jointly chaired by Jim Knight, Minister for Schools and Learners; Kevin Brennan, Parliamentary under Secretary of State for Children, Young People and Families; and Maggie Atkinson, President of the Association of Directors of Children's Services.
