Local Authority Developing Practice

Up and down the country, local authorities have been working with childcare and education providers in both the private and voluntary sectors to implement different aspects of the Government's childcare strategy.

As part of the implementation process, local authorities and partners have recorded and analysed their progress - and the lessons learned - to ensure that emerging good practice can be shared and taken forward.

This wealth of information, in the form of reports, surveys, case studies and guidance documents, is now available; grouped by theme, as detailed below.

Facilitating Childcare Markets focuses on meeting the local authority duties to assess and deliver childcare.

Implementing the Flexible Free Entitlement explores how local authorities are working towards the requirement to ensure that from 2010 the parents of all three and four-year olds have free access to 15 hours per week flexible early years provision.

Increasing Childcare Take-up - BME shares the learning from projects aiming to extend the reach, quality and take up of childcare and early years' provision among Black and Minority Ethnic Families.

Increasing Childcare Take-up - Disabled Children focuses on approaches used to improve need-assessment of families with disabled children, and captures the lessons learned during the lead-up to the Childcare Accessibility pilot projects.

Improving Quality and Developing the Workforce provides examples of different local authority approaches to developing workforce skills, and to establishing the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

Developing Children's Centres looks at the 'one-stop' service approach for providing parents, carers and parents-to-be with family-focused, flexible, yet integrated services and information.

Rolling Out Extended Schools provides examples of how schools, working in partnership with local authorities, providers and neighbouring schools, successfully enabled access to a core of integrated 'extended' services.
