Improving Quality and Developing the Workforce

A key challenge for the childcare workforce is the implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) - a comprehensive framework for the learning, development and care of children from birth to age five.

Provided for in The Childcare Act 2006, it will be introduced in September 2008 and will ensure that all young children have access to an integrated, learning-, development- and care-experience that evidence shows enables them to achieve the best outcomes, and reassures parents of consistent standards of education and care for their child whichever setting they attend.

Resources and documents
As the EYFS provides for children from birth to age five, the resources have, on the whole, been produced by local authorities participating in the Childcare Implementation Project. They are grouped around the four key tasks involved in developing the workforce:

Auditing the workforce (a link to the resources will be available soon)

Developing a workforce strategy (a link to the resources will be available soon)

Training and incentivising providers to improve workforce skills (a link to the resources will be available soon)

Monitoring and ensuring quality (a link to the resources will be available soon)
