This letter from Sheila Scales, Director of Sure Start, Extended Schools and Childcare Group, sets out new duties, targets and guidance for spending the General Sure Start Grant in 2007-08.
2007-08 is important for early years and childcare delivery. New duties under the Childcare Act 2006 come into force, which will affect local authorities and their partners.
The key challenges are to:
- Make progress towards meeting targets on children's development at age
5, reducing gaps between disadvantaged children and their peers
- Deliver on commitments to Phase 2 Sure Start Children's Centres
- Assess supply and demand for childcare in your area and improve the take-up of formal childcare by low income families.
