A copy of the letter from Beverley Hughes to directors of children's services about expanding positive activities programmes for young people, highlighting work around tackling young people's involvement in gang culture during 2008-09.
Beverley Hughes has written to all directors of children's services to summarise the Government's expectations of how local authorities (LAs) use the investment for positive activities programmes for young people over 2008-11. This investment has been made to help LAs implement the commitment in the 10 Year Youth Strategy to expand the provision of targeted positive activities. Details of funding allocations for each LA were issued in December 2007.
The letter:
- Recognises the progress that has been made in improving the outcomes for the most disadvantaged and vulnerable young people
- Outlines the Government's vision and programme of work to deliver integrated support and activities to young people
- Positions the delivery of positive activities as part of a comprehensive local youth offer
- Describes how 15 LAs are being given additional money in 2008-9 in order to make progress on helping young people avoid serious outcomes such as gang crime, and emphasises the ambition to trail blaze how we can get the most at-risk young people involved in positive activities
- Explains that arrangements to offer the 15 LAs expert support to help them
develop their workforce capacity are being developed
