Pathfinder focuses on narrow but deep scope

This authority conducted its pathfinder in just two streets. This produced a narrow but deep slice through the community. It is anticipated that learning will be applicable to the wider authority, although engagement with young people will need to be specific to each area.
This authority felt that the best way to run its targeted youth support project was to choose a scope that took a narrow but deep slice through the community - they chose two streets. Managers also felt this scope would help them prepare for their joint area review.
All the families within the two streets were invited to be involved, initially by letter, then by knocking on doors. The 16 interviews agreed in this way were supplemented by small group work with two youth clubs, a looked-after children's group, some young carers and a group from the street which was interviewed by the wardens.
Some employees were concerned that, as the findings were so local, they would be hard to use across the whole authority. After the evidence was gathered, it was clear that the data (from workshops and interviews) gave a perspective that would be the same across the authority. The only area where new work is required is in engaging young people in other areas an activity which is already essential for success.
