Eleven local authorities in the North East have established and funded the North East Regional Commissioning Unit (NERCU) to develop joint commissioning for children in care on a regional rather than local basis. It facilitates partnership working across the partner local authorities and marks the first step in collaborative regional commissioning to address the high level of out of region child placements.
This case study reports progress on setting up NERCU. It highlights its initial priorities, in particular its development of a regional provider directory. Indications show that it has raised awareness of its presence and objectives, improved communications between local authorities, and encouraged collaborative working between local authorities and independent providers.
