Local Authority Visits: Pat Joseph
This presentation summarises early lessons from the six local authorities who
are engaged in increasing awareness and take-up of childcare among BME
families.
Leicester City Council: Widening BME Participation
This presentation describes how Leicester City Council have undertaken targeted
home visits in two Super Output Areas of the city to promote awareness and
take-up of free early year places for 3 and 4 year olds. 121 families were
contacted and 52 registered for their free nursery place.
Rotherham City Council: Childcare Taster Initiative
This presentation describes how Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council expanded
its childcare taster initiative to offer six free sessions in four areas of the
authority with high numbers of BME families. Activity has included close work
with providers, and partners outreach activity with parents. 30 one-session
vouchers have been redeemed by BME parents/carers and 19 six- session
vouchers.
London Borough of Tower Hamlets: Early Years Information Strategy
This presentation describes how the London Borough of Tower Hamlets
has provided nursery management software (Abacus) to a wide range of settings
to enable the authority to obtain accurate and timely data on places, take-up
and ethnic origin. 38 settings have signed up to Abacus out of a total of
63.
Manchester City Council: Identification Strategy for BME families of
Manchester
This presentation explores how Manchester City Council has focused on
improving information about childcare and take-up of childcare element of
Working Tax Credit among the Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Somali communities.
There has been direct engagement with 105 families and take-up by 15 families
of the early years entitlement.
London Borough of Camden: Community Advocates
This presentation describes how the London Borough of Camden has developed
community advocates to make contact and increase childcare take-up among the
Somali, Congolese and Traveller communities. A DVD is being produced to help
improve information in recognition that information and engagement strategies
need to be long-term and tailored to individual communities.
City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council

free places by 3- and 4-year-olds
