Disabled children are more vulnerable to abuse or neglect than non-disabled children. This resource is intended to help those with a strategic or planning responsibility for children understand their particular needs and consider how best to safeguard and promote their welfare.
It sets out guidelines for LSCBs and for individual practitioners involved in safeguarding processes. It also highlights issues relating to communicating with disabled children and provides information about resources and about training.
DfES commissioned the Council for Disabled Children to produce this resource. The Staying Safe Action Plan commits that this resource will be updated in the future.
Working Together to Safeguard Children sets out how individuals and organisations should work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children. There is specific guidance in part 2, section 11.28 on safeguarding disabled children.
Further information about services for disabled children and young people is available on this website.
