The updated managers' guide is for all strategic and operational managers across all children's services who have responsibility for implementing a lead professional model of working to ensure better outcomes for children, young people and their families.
The updated practitioners' guide is for practitioners who want to find out more and for those who are already carrying out lead professional work.
All children and young people with additional needs who require integrated support from more than one practitioner should experience a seamless and effective service. This is delivered most effectively when one practitioner takes a lead role to ensure that frontline services are coordinated, coherent and achieving intended outcomes.
The lead professional role contributes to the delivery of integrated frontline services, as outlined in the statutory guidance supporting section 10 (interagency cooperation) and section 11 (safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children) of the Children Act 2004.
A number of local authorities trialled the role of lead professional alongside the Common Assessment Framework during 2005-6. Evaluations of the trials informed revisions to the lead professional guidance.
