Funding for the free entitlement of early years education for three and four-year-olds is provided through the Dedicated Schools Grant, which contains funding for education from 3-16 years.

To support local authorities and providers in understanding the current funding arrangements, we are providing a series of frequently asked questions. They include information on how the Dedicated Schools Grant applies to early years provision for maintained and PVI settings.

Local authorities are advised to take into account a range of factors when deciding upon funding allocations and to consider differentiated funding, both between and within provider groups. To help with this we have provided a case study from Shropshire which provides information on good practice in funding the free entitlement.
