Do it 4 Real is a national residential programme for young people from all walks of life aimed at providing 10- to 16-year-olds with structured adventure and creative activities during the summer.
The 10-year youth strategy, Aiming High for Young People, published in July 2007 said: the Government will build on the success of the Do it 4 Real programme to offer more young people from deprived neighbourhoods access to residential opportunities.
The 2008 Do it 4 Real scheme is being managed by the Youth Hostel Association (YHA). We will competitively tender for a new managing agent for 2009-11.
In 2008, around 10.5k young people will attend camps across 27 sites in England.
Camps run from Sunday until Friday. All camp places are subsidised, with young people paying a minimum of £25 and a maximum of £399.
The scheme offers young people the opportunity to mix with their peers and have a fun-filled time in a safe environment while enjoying new and challenging experiences and activities. The range of activities includes: watersports, film and media, performance arts, live like a star, survival skills, mountain walking, paintballing, quad biking, archery, abseiling.
Taking part in a residential gives young people the opportunity to develop self-discipline, self-respect and self-confidence enabling them to communicate more affectively with a range of people and work in a team.
