Children Missing Education: Experiences of Implementing the DfES Guidelines

In September 2006 the DfES published the results of independent research into local authorities' experiences of using the 2004 non-statutory guidance 'Identifying and Maintaining Contact with Children Missing or at Risk of Going Missing from Education'. 129 local authorities participated in telephone interviews, and nine authorities and their partners took part in follow-up face-to-face interviews.

The study found that most authorities had the taken following measures:

  • Named a contact for receiving information about children missing education (94%)

  • Defined the responsibilities of the named contact (86%)

  • Named a database administrator for 'school 2 school' - the system for electronic transfer of common transfer files (83%)

  • Encouraged schools to use this system (78%)
