The Institute of Social and Economic Research at the University of Essex have used recent birth cohort and household panel datasets to explore the causal effects of teenage motherhood, looking at a wide range of possible consequences for both mother and child.

Their findings take account of associations arising partly from the fact that already-disadvantaged teenagers have a higher risk of having a baby.
