The purpose of this leaflet is to raise awareness among health professionals and schools about ways in which joint working can support children and young people. It also shows how they can assist one another to help to achieve the targets they work together on including teenage pregnancy, immunisation and childhood obesity.
It illustrates how basing health services in schools can impact positively on attendance and attainment, by removing wider barriers to learning. The leaflet includes case studies showing good practice.
There is no expectation that schools and individual health services need to kick start these new working arrangements without support. The intention is that local authorities and primary care trusts should take the lead in developing local strategic visions, using the children's trust approach to prioritise roll out and resources.
