Childcare

The Government wants families with disabled children to be able to access high quality childcare that helps children grow and fulfil their potential, and gives their parents the opportunity to work.

The Aiming High for Disabled Children programme has allocated £35 million to improve childcare provision for families with disabled children. This will be used by local authorities to pilot accessible forms of childcare. These pilots will focus on childcare for those disabled children who are currently least likely to be able to access services, including older children and children with complex needs.

Local authorities have new duties to secure a sufficient supply of childcare in their area, with a particular focus on the provision of childcare for disabled children.

The pilot areas for the childcare funding have now been selected. They are: Barking & Dagenham, Bradford, Camden, Cornwall, Luton, Northumberland, Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Sefton and Solihull. For futher information, please read the DCSF press release.
