Consultation on a National Framework for Assessing Children's Continuing
Care published
The consultation
on a National Framework for Assessing Children's Continuing Care has
been published. The framework is intended to help Primary Care Trusts (PCTs)
apply a consistent and transparent approach to assessing the healthcare needs
of children and young people, and to work jointly with local authorities (LAs)
to provide services in the light of those needs. This framework will apply to
children and young people under the age of 18 years who have complex health
needs because of disability, accident or illness.
Deadline for responses is December 31 2008.
National Indicator - survey methodology published
The Aiming High report, May 2007, made a commitment to introduce an
indicator on the provision of services for disabled children. DCSF commissioned
the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen) to help develop the
methodology of the survey that will underpin the disabled children's
services national indicator (NI 54). The
NatCen report which makes recommendations on the form and methodology for
measuring the indicator has now been published. The next stage of the process
will be tendering for a contractor to carry out the survey. It is expected that
the indicator will be measured for the first time at a local level in
2009-10.
Parent Participation Grants Programme Launched
As part of the Aiming High for Disabled Children (AHDC) programme the
Government committed £5 million to support parent involvement over the
next three years. The Parent Participation Grants Programme has now been
launched by the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Over the first
two years of the programme (2008 to 2010), £3 million will be available
through a programme of grants and support from Together for Disabled Children
to develop parent participation activities in each local authority area across
England. For further information visit the Together
for Disabled Children website.
Childcare Pilot Launch
On Friday, 5 September 2008, the Childcare Division hosted the first
meeting of the National Learning Set for the Disabled Children's Access to
Childcare (DCATCH) programme. Nine of the local authorities from the first wave
of pilots attended. Introductory presentations from the Childcare and Special
Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Division, and group discussions around
proposed 'success criteria' for the pilots took place on the day. For
more information on the childcare pilots visit the AHDC
childcare pages.

The Department for Children Schools and Families and Department of

other AHDC resources. PCTs should also consider this guidance in shaping their
response to the 2008-09 NHS Operating Framework priorities. For further
information, please read the cover
letter regarding associated funding announcements.
