Planning

School place planning has long been a traditional role of the local authority (LA). But the context of school place planning has changed in recent years. Planning now needs to be undertaken in partnership with the local children's trust. This is particularly important as Building Schools for the Future (BSF) and the Primary Capital Programme (PCP) are bringing opportunities for major capital investment.

In drawing up plans, LAs will need to explain a diverse range of options which could engage additional expertise and introduce fresh approaches. Recent changes to 14-19 provision have led to new opportunities to raise skill levels and outcomes for young people.

Resources
A range of complementary resources, including full versions of the Pathfinders' project reports, are available under the following subject-areas:

- School place planning
- Federations and Trusts
- Capital Programmes
- 14 to 19

Planning is the second stage of four in the Schools Commissioning Cycle (as explained in the guide). Resources for the other three stages are available on the Establishing Demand, Implementationand Support and Challenge pages.
