Support and Challenge
Local authorities' (LAs) role in holding schools to account is clear. The Education and Inspections Act confers new powers to intervene where schools are causing concern. LAs may direct a school to take a partner, which may be another school or college. Collaboration can be an effective way of strengthening leadership and developing teaching and learning through the sharing of good practice.
LAs also have the power to issue warning notices to schools where pupil progress is judged to be unacceptably low. There is now a greater emphasis on LAs' role in preventing failure, identifying and notifying schools which cause concern.
